Animal rights activists expressed outrage yesterday following the sacrificial killing of the "world’s heaviest pig" in Taiwan.
The annual Pig of God festival in Hsin Chu features a contest to determine the heaviest pig.
The winning pig is slaughtered according to religious ritual and paraded before a large crowd of festival goers.
This year’s "winner" had been force-fed sand and metal in order to attain a weight of 908 kg (nearly one ton).
Although the contest has been outlawed, police in Hsin Chu are hesitant to enforce the ban.
A spokesperson for the world Society for the Protection of Animals called the event a "grotesque freak show."
